Spirit Of The Herd

Volunteering

Volunteer With Us

If you are keen to help out taking care of our beautiful rescue ponies and horses we want to hear from you! The jobs are not glamorous and we are mainly looking for people who can give their time poo picking and helping to feed our older horses in the morning and evening.

We also need help running our popular ‘Pony Pamper Sessions’ on the weekends. If you are able to give up some time at the weekend and have a background in working with children we could really use your help. You can fill out our volunteer application form here.

In return you get to work with some amazing people and of course beautiful ponies who love cuddles!

We also welcome corporate volunteer days, DofE, Work Placements, Student Placements and so on. Please contact us to enquire on our availability.

Our Current Volunteers

We have a number of regular volunteers who help out in a variety of vital ways; each person brings something different.

Our volunteers have a range of backgrounds; some have formal equine qualifications, others lots of practical experience, and others with skills such as working with children and conducting equine-assisted therapy. A number of people come to us to learn about how to work with horses.

Julie Mann

Julie is one of our extremely dedicated volunteers, Julie helps out at the herd day to day and in the background. Julie is also our H&S officer.

“I have loved horses all my life. Since I retired 2 years ago I have been volunteering at the herd and I am finally fufilling my childhood dreams of helping to look after multiple horses and ponies whilst learning about their care & management. It’s demanding, physically and emotionally but I have the support of wonderful fellow volunteers who are friends for life, human and equine. I am lucky enough to work with a very special horse called star but this is me with Rupert, laughing at me. “

Holly Nelson

Holly started volunteering at SoTH to help train the horses and ponies, in the time Holly has been with us she has kindly shared her skills in marketing and does a lot of background work on social media, marketing and publicity.

From my first donkey ride at the age of 3, I have been obsessed with all things equine. From riding ponies bareback in fields, to showing shires in-hand at shows, to hacking out in adulthood, horses have played a huge part in my life. Now that I work for myself part time, I am lucky enough to be a horse handler at SoTH. The Herd is such a special group of volunteers – everyone has such a passion for looking after our rescues. It is humbling to see how much we all care and the amazing jobs we do. It’s a hugely rewarding way of giving back. [pictured with Boxer]
